What to expect when competing in a U.S. college for swimming and diving:

Fall Semester:
  • Swimming is a year-round sport, with athletes competing in tournaments throughout the U.S. school year.
  • Events are held between early-September and late-March.
  • Athletes may have practice or tournaments scheduled during winter break, as the season is held across two semesters.
  • You can expect approximately 12 events in an average season.
Spring Semester:
  • The off-season for college swimming is between the end of the spring semester and the beginning of the fall semester.
  • You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the off-season, and up to 20 hours per week during the competitive season.
  • In addition to training, you will be required to complete weight lifting and conditioning on a regular basis in preparation for competitions.

Men’s Swimming and Diving programs all over the U.S. participate under all governing bodies and divisions.

NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association

The NCAA endorses three divisions of men’s collegiate swimming and diving.

Division I
  • Currently sponsor 133 men’s swimming and diving programs
  • 9.9 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per men’s team
Division II
  • Currently sponsor 73 men’s swimming and diving programs
  • 8.1 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per men’s team
Division III
  • Currently sponsor 229 men’s swimming and diving programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered swimming scholarship or diving scholarship
NAIA – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The NAIA endorses one division of men’s collegiate swimming and diving.

  • Currently sponsor 27 men’s swimming programs
  • 8 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available per men’s team
NJCAA – National Junior College Athletic Association

The NJCAA endorses three divisions of men’s collegiate swimming and diving.

  • Currently sponsor 59 men’s swimming and diving programs across three divisions
  • 15 full swimming scholarships and diving scholarships are available across all divisions
