What to expect when competing in U.S. college track & field:

Fall Semester

  • The Fall semester is the off season for track and field but distance runners often compete in cross country.
  • You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the Fall.
  • Your schedule will feature individual or small group practices.
  • Weight lifting and conditioning will be required in addition to normal training.

Spring Semester

  • Track and Field is a Spring sport, held in the second half of the U.S. school year.
  • Events are usually between January and June.
  • You can expect approximately 15-20 team events in an average season.
  • As an individual sport, you will travel with the team but compete individually for team points.

Women’s track & field programs all over the U.S. participate under all governing bodies and divisions.

NCAA

The NCAA endorses three divisions of men’s collegiate track and field.

Division I
  • Currently sponsor 287 men’s college track and field programs
  • 12.6 full track and field scholarships are available per men’s college track and field team
Division II
  • Currently sponsor 216 men’s college track and field programs
  • 12.6 full track and field scholarships available per men’s college track and field team
Division III
  • Currently sponsor 316 men’s college track and field programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered track and field scholarship

NJCAA

The NJCAA endorses three divisions of men’s collegiate track and field.

  • Currently sponsor 136 men’s college track and field programs across three divisions
  • 20 full track and field scholarships available across all divisions

 

NAIA

The NAIA endorses one division of men’s collegiate track and field.

  • Currently sponsor 169 men’s college track and field programs
  • 12 full track and field scholarships available per men’s college track and field team
