Transferring as a college athlete is a growing trend, with many athletes seeking new opportunities for various reasons. But what does it involve? Why transfer? What’s the process? And how do you stay within the rules?

In this blog, we’ll explain the transfer process and how KAA can support you every step of the way.

What Does it Mean to ‘Transfer’?

Transferring means leaving your current college to enrol at a different school to continue both your academics and athletics. It involves contacting other coaches directly or entering the NCAA Transfer Portal so other schools can contact you. Transferring gives you a chance to find a ‘better fit’- Whatever that means for you!

Why Do Athletes Transfer?

There are lots of reasons why student-athletes decide to transfer. Sometimes it’s about playing time- they want to be on the field more. Other times, coaching changes or shifts in team culture prompt athletes to look for a better fit. For some, academics or personal reasons play a big role, while others want to move to a different competitive level, such as transferring from a junior college to a university, or from Division II to Division I. Whatever your reason, transferring is a major decision that deserves careful thought.

At KAA, we understand these challenges and are here to help you weigh your options. Our team works with athletes to clarify goals and figure out if transferring is the right step.

What is the Process of Transferring?

The process of transferring will look different for everyone, depending on the situation from which you are transferring from. The main thing that will get this process up and running is notifying your current coach of your decision. Once you have taken this step, you can then start the recruiting process of contacting coaches. Whether this is contacting coaches directly if you’re transferring from a Junior College / NAIA university, or through using the transfer portal if you’re at an NCAA DI or DII school.

The Academic Side of Transferring

Transferring isn’t just about athletics. Your academics matter just as much, if not more. Each school has different course requirements and policies for accepting transfer credits. You want to make sure you stay on track to graduate and maintain eligibility.

Our advisors at KAA work closely with you and your academic staff to review transcripts, plan your courses, and ensure your academic progress stays strong through the transfer.

Taking Charge of Your Transfer Journey

Once you’ve started the transfer process, it’s time to be proactive. Coaches will reach out, but you should also reach out to programs that interest you. Update your athletic resume, film highlights, and be ready to talk about why you want to transfer and what you’re looking for in your new school.

Think of this as a new recruiting process where you’re re-selling yourself. KAA supports you in preparing your materials and communicating effectively with coaches.

Making the Right Decision for You

Before committing to a new school, think carefully about the bigger picture. Will this program support your long-term athletic and academic goals? Is the team culture a good fit? How will the location and school environment affect your happiness and growth?

KAA helps you evaluate these factors, so you’re confident in your choice- not just as an athlete but as a student and person.
